Application Process

NH&RA is now accepting applications for the 2011 J. Timothy Anderson Awards for Excellence in Historic Rehabilitation!

Application Instructions

Eligible Properties
Eligible applicants include properties that have undergone a certified historic rehabilitation; have used or intend to use the federal investment tax credit for historic rehabilitation under IRC Sec. 47; and were placed in service on or after July 16, 2009. Properties that have chosen to forego historic tax credits must demonstrate that the rehabilitation is consistent with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards or other local preservation ordinance. Projects must be privately owned or be controlled by a non-government entity via an enhanced-use lease or other long-term lease.

Categories
Applicants will be judged in the following categories. Projects may be submitted in only one category. 2011 categories are:

  • Best Commercial / Retail / Non-Residential Project
  • Best Historic Rehab Utilizing LIHTCs (Small/Up to $5 million development cost)
  • Best Historic Rehab Utilizing LIHTCs (Large/Over $5 million development cost)
  • Best Historic Rehab Utilizing New Markets Tax Credits
  • Best Market-Rate / Mixed-Income Residential
  • Best Historic Rehabilitation Project Involving New Construction (refer to FAQ)
  • Most Innovative Adaptive Reuse

Additionally, Judges’ awards will also be given for Most Advanced Financial Structure and Achievement in Sustainability for a total of nine awards. Candidates for the judges’ awards will be selected from the overall pool of applicants.

Judging
Projects will be reviewed by a multi-disciplinary panel of judges, comprised of individuals with backgrounds in architecture, real estate development, construction, finance, public policy, historic preservation and economic development. The judging process will take several factors into consideration, including:

  • Overall design and quality of the property;
  • Interpretation and respect of historic design elements;
  • Integration of arch program with historic character;
  • Innovative approach to construction and use of building materials;
  • Impact on surrounding community;
  • Financial and market success of project (refer to FAQ);
  • Sustainability

Note: Projects may be nominated in only one category; however, judges may re-nominate a project in a different category, if appropriate.

Complete applications must include:

  1. Project application form complete with pertinent project information;
  2. At least one major “impact” photo of the project;
  3. Narrative statement of 750 to 1,000 words (see application for instructions);
  4. Roster of all parties involved in the transaction, including developer, owner of record, architect(s), engineer, general contractor, lending sources for construction, bridge, permanent and mezzanine financing, equity investor, tax credit syndicator(s), etc. (include contact information (mail, e-mail, phone) for purposes of notifying finalists and winners);
  5. Up to five pages of press clips and/or marketing materials;
  6. Up to 12 additional supporting photos (e.g. interior, exterior, historic details, etc.) It is recommend that at least half of these photos be ‘before and after’ photos;
  7. Financing sources (see application for details);
  8. Programs and resources utilized (see application for details);
  9. Applications must be received by close of business Friday, July 15, 2011.

PLEASE NOTE: Completed applications and attachments must be submitted in electronic format as a single, combined file. Unless otherwise noted, please submit application materials and attachments as .pdf or Microsoft Office documents. Pictures/photographs should be imbedded into the applications materials, but should also be provided individually as .jpg or .gif files. Applicants should submit applications on CD-ROM/DVD-ROMs via mail to:
