Affordable Housing Economic Update

This session will explore how national economic trends will impact the affordable housing industry and development over the next year. The presentation will pay particular focus on the Metro-DC area. Our presenter Dr. Lisa Sturtevant is an Assistant Research Professor at the George Mason University (GMU) School of Public Policy in the Center for Regional Analysis. The Center for Regional Analysis conducts research and analytical studies on economic, fiscal, demographic, housing, and social and policy issues related to the current and future growth of the Virginia, Maryland, and DC areas.

Helen Kanovsky, General Counsel, U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development

Helen KanovksyHelen R. Kanovsky was sworn in by Secretary Shaun Donovan as the General Counsel of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development on May 4, 2009. As General Counsel she is the chief law officer of the Department and principal legal adviser to the Secretary and staff of HUD. She is also head of the Departmental Enforcement Center. Ms. Kanovksy will provide NH&RA with a unique insiders perspective as HUD reinvents many of its core programs.

Ms. Kanovsky has a long and distinguished career in affordable housing. Prior to taking her current position as HUD General Counsel, she was longtime member of NH&RA, most recently serving as Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel of the AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust for 13 years. She also served as Executive Vice President and General Counsel of GE Capital Asset Management Corporation and predecessor company Skyline Financial Services Corporation from 1986-1994. She has also held several prominent positions in the Federal Government, including as Chief of Staff to Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts and as a special assistant to HUD Secretary Patricia Roberts Harris.
