The Woda Group, a member of NH&RA, received the Michigan Governor’s Award for Historic Preservation for the rehabilitation of Lloyd’s Department Store in Menominee, MI. A dilapidated former department store and factory was converted into 44 housing units and community and commercial space. The new residents enjoy proximity to all that Menominee offers, as well as spectacular views of Lake Michigan. The Lloyd House apartments have served as a catalyst for other commercial development in downtown Menominee. This is the 2nd Governor’s Award that The Woda Group has won in the Award’s 13 year history. Co-award winners, Hooker DeJong Architects of Muskegon, and the City of Menominee under the leadership of the Honorable Jean Stegman, Mayor, also contributed to the development.

Lloyd House was opened in 1926 by wealthy industrialist, Marshall B. Lloyd, and called by many his wonder store, the main entry included a marble-embellished arcade leading to a theatre with the first sound system for “talkies” north of Milwaukee. In 1946 Lloyd sold the building, which was then converted from retail to light industrial until it was once again sold and used for manufacturing. The Woda Group acquired the building in 2012 after it had been abandoned for several years.
