Beacon Communities is pleased to announce that it has received a competitive funding award from the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) for North Square at the Mill District.

Located in Amherst, MA in the heart of the Pioneer Valley, North Square at the Mill District will be a new sustainably designed, mixed-income and mixed-use community surrounding a traditional New England village green. This development will provide housing for people who work in Amherst and the immediate area. Of the 130 new apartments, 26 will be set aside for households earning up to 50% of the area median income and the balance will be market rate. The community will include new, fully accessible apartments and have direct access to the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority (PVTA) bus system.   In addition, North Square will provide commercial retail space for 8-10 new business opportunities, public and private open space, a new children’s play area, and amenities for residents.  The development will create construction period and permanent jobs.

“North Square was inspired by the Town of Amherst’s vision to create new housing, business opportunities and jobs in North Amherst; we are thrilled to have received funding from DHCD”, said Darcy L. Jameson, Senior Development Director at Beacon Communities.

“It’s been a real pleasure working with the Town of Amherst, the community and DHCD to make this project a reality,” said Dara Kovel, President of Beacon Communities Development, “We look forward to breaking ground.”

Beacon anticipates that it will close on the financing and begin construction in early spring 2018.
