The US House of Representatives recently passed the “Housing Choice Voucher Mobility Demonstration Act of 2018 (H.R. 5793) on a vote of 368-19. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Sean Duffy (R-WI), would authorize the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development to carry out a housing choice voucher mobility demonstration to encourage families receiving such voucher assistance to move to lower-poverty areas and expand access to opportunity areas. This would be achieved through a proposed $30 million in competitive funding for up to 15 new or existing housing mobility programs. The bill also provides for an additional $20 million for a special fund of new vouchers for families with young children.

Sen. Todd Young (R-IN) introduced companion legislation (S. 2945) in the senate in May 2018, where it enjoys bi-partisan support from four additional cosponsors.
