The Architectural Team said a new mixed-income housing east Boston development is demonstrating how smart planning and design can help cities add much-needed residential space on underutilized land.

Called Harborwalk Residences and Harbor 125 Apartments, the redevelopment replacing decades-old public housing—formerly with only 20 apartments—has yielded 52 units, including 22 deeply affordable homes and 30 mixed-income condominiums, while restoring waterfront views.

Designed by The Architectural Team (TAT) for WinnDevelopment, the two-building, transit-oriented development now with 36 affordable units is seen as an important step in the years-long process of reconnecting East Boston’s Maverick Square neighborhood to Boston Harbor, the company said.
