Secretary Scott Turner (HUD) and Secretary Kristi Noem (Department of Homeland Security) signed an interagency Memoranda of Understanding, “American Housing Programs for American Citizens,” to provide a full-time HUD staff member at the Incident Command Center (ICC).
- The HUD staff member will assist in operations, facilitate data sharing, and prevent housing program funding from going to non-US citizens.
HUD also announced the Moving to Work demonstration program at Public Housing Authorities must comply with the 2019 proposed rule prohibiting HUD-funded service providers from providing financial assistance to non-US citizens.
- When the Trump administration proposed this rule during his first term, 38 Democratic members of Congress wrote a letter to then HUD Secretary Ben Carson opposing these changes.
Why it matters: Both of these actions align HUD funding for housing programs with President Trump’s Executive Order, Ending Taxpayer Subsidization of Open Borders.
