Last week, the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee held a nomination hearing for Andrew Hughes to be deputy secretary and David Woll to be general counsel at HUD.

What they’re saying: Both Hughes and Woll promised to follow the law in response to questions about fair housing laws, maintaining field offices in every state, and backpay for reinstated probationary employees.

  • Hughes said HUD would review prior HUD guidance on discussing a neighborhood’s crime rate, and Woll said HUD would review grant funding for faith-based organizations that offer prayers before meals.
  • Hughes declined to answer questions on the Green and Resilient Retrofit Program (GRRP), citing active litigation.

What’s next: The committee will meet again in the coming weeks to vote on their nominations.
