- He served as chief of staff under former HUD Secretary Ben Carson during President Trump’s first term.
- Hughes worked on Ben Carson’s 2016 presidential campaign and briefly on Donald Trump’s campaign.
- He also served as the executive director and CEO of the American Cornerstone Institute, a think tank founded by Carson.
