Secretary Scott Turner announced the end of a COVID-era policy that required public housing agencies (PHAs) and property owners receiving HUD funding to provide 30-day written notification for nonpayment of rent prior to eviction.
In Context: Secretary Turner confirmed his support for overturning this policy during an oversight briefing in January in front of the House Committee on Financial Services.
Regulatory requirements for notice of termination for nonpayment of rent will return to pre-2021 requirements, which are driven by state and local laws.
This rule also removes requirements from the 2021 and 2024 rules related to information in termination notices.
This rule is effective March 30, 2026.
