Congress faces a midnight deadline on Friday, March 14, to pass a continuing resolution to keep the government open and fund programs through September 30. The House voted yesterday 217 to 213 to send the resolution (H.R. 1968) to the Senate.
Go deeper: The bill includes changes from FY2024 levels for the following HUD and USDA accounts:
- $32.145 billion for Tenant-Based Rental Assistance (TBRA)
- $3.65 billion increase over FY2024. House Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) estimates that this short funds the account, resulting in 32,000 fewer vouchers.
- $16.490 billion for Project-Based Rental Assistance (PBRA)
- $480 million increase over FY2024
- $931.4 million for Section 202 Housing for the Elderly
- $18 million increase over FY 2024
- $256.7 million for Section 811 Housing for Persons with Disabilities
- $48.7 million increase over FY 2024
- Cuts HUD’s Community Development Fund in half, zeroing out congressional requested funding, also known as earmarks.
- $34 million for USDA Rental Assistance Programs
- $5.9 million increase over FY 2024
- Cuts the rural broadband Community Connect program by $30 million
What’s next: The Senate will vote on the resolution and must meet a 60-vote threshold to pass, requiring at least seven Democratic votes to prevent a shutdown.
