The House Financial Services Committee held a hearing entitled Decades of Dysfunction: Restoring Accountability at HUD on April 8 with HUD Acting Inspector General Stephen Begg. His testimony focused on four key risk areas within HUD:

  1. Reducing improper payments;
  2. Detecting and preventing fraud;
  3. Managing counterparty risk; and
  4. Improving living conditions in HUD-assisted housing.

HUD’s Office of Inspector General currently has 699 open recommendations, 24 of which it has identified as a priority.

Much of the hearing focused on HUD’s outdated IT systems, DOGE actions at HUD, challenges with the decentralized nature of HUD programs and issues at public housing authorities.
