In his statement, Sec.Turner said “Taxpayer dollars are finite. Our responsibility is not. The President’s proposal reflects that approach. It reins in wasteful spending, stops the ballooning of federal welfare programs, and continues HUD’s focus on serving the American people. We are mission minded.”
In a remarkably candid exchange, Chair Tom Cole (R-OK) of the full appropriations committee and Chair Steve Womack (R-AR) of the T-HUD subcommittee both said that the appropriations committee intends to fund HUD programs above the President’s FY 2027 budget request.
Democrats asked questions about HUD’s proposed mixed-status rule, the lack of a supplemental CDBG-DR request for the Palisades, CA fire in in January 2025, and cuts to fair housing, CDBG, and HOPWA; Republicans focused on zoning, permitting, and the cost of regulation, labor, and materials.
