U.S. Representatives Mike Turner (R-OH) and Russ Carnahan (D-MO), recently introduced the Rehabilitation of Historic Schools Act (HR 6151) which would amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to allow the federal Historic Tax Credit (HTC) to be used to renovate older public schools. HR 6151 is companion legislation to S 1685, which was previously introduced in October 2011. More specifically, the bill would remove a current prior-use restriction which has previously made it difficult for local governments to partner with private developers on school renovations. HR 6151 was referred to the House Committee on Ways and Means.
