The National Housing & Rehabilitation Association (NH&RA) today presented developer Robert J. Greer, President of the Michaels Development Company, with its inaugural Chairman’s Award, at the organization’s 2012 Summer Institute conference in Edgartown, Massachusetts.

The Chairman’s Award was established to recognize individuals for life-time achievement in the affordable housing and tax credit development industry and for exemplary leadership and service to NH&RA.  Honorees are selected by the current Chairman of NH&RA.

Debra Koehler, President of Sage Partners and Chairman of NH&RA, said, “We are pleased to honor Bob Greer with the Chairman’s Award.  Bob’s forty year commitment to, and impact on, the affordable housing industry is unparalleled.  Bob has made a difference at every level from residents’ lives to Capitol Hill.”

“Bob has been a friend, mentor, and trusted advisor to so many of us in this field that it is our sincere pleasure to have him be the inaugural recipient of this recognition,” observed Peter Bell, President & CEO of NH&RA. “As Thom Amdur [NH&RA’s Executive Director] and Debra Koehler can attest, any organization is fortunate to have an individual like Bob among its leadership.”

A graduate of Miami (Ohio) University and an architect, Greer was once Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency, until 1977 when he joined Michaels Development Company, then a 3-person firm in Marlton, NJ.
At that time Michaels Development specialized in the development of federal Section 8 housing in the Mid-Atlantic region. Greer was named President of Michaels Development in 1997, which has since then grown into the largest private-sector owner of affordable housing in America with 70 full-time staff persons, more than 18,000 units in varying stages of development across the country, and a pipeline to keep the company busy for the next 20 years.

With a portfolio diversified among project-based Section 8, mixed-finance, mixed-income, and tax credit housing””and more recently military and student housing””The Michaels Organization prides itself in taking on the most difficult projects.
Greer has generously contributed time to NH&RA as well as numerous other associations that advocate for affordable housing programs, including for the past two years making weekly trips to Washington, D.C. to visit with U.S. Senators, Representatives, and their staff in an active campaign to protect and expand the low-income housing tax credit program as Congress debates comprehensive tax reform legislation.
