The Capital Needs Assessment (CNA) e-Tool Virtual Classroom Curriculum is designed to provide small groups of participants a chance to learn about and discuss aspects of the Assessment Tool and the Submission Portal. A part of each delivery is a presentation by an instructor who will describe the topical issue, the problems HUD has identified, and some tips for remediation. The second part of each delivery consists of a discussion among participants on the issue, barriers encountered, and resolutions. Classes last 1 hour.

Currently, there are classes on four topics. Each class is offered at four different times, to maximize interested persons’ availability to attend. The classes are described below.

Class Offerings

CNA e-Tool: Naming Components

In this class, participants learn about the correct way to name and group individual component IDs, to make them as descriptive as possible and help distinguish between components, alternatives, and recommendations. During the first part of the class, the instructor provides useful tools and tips for ensuring that the component IDs are descriptive and named appropriately. During the second part of the class, participants ask questions and engage in a discussion about the CNA e-Tool and get into specifics about how to name component IDs in a way that makes sense to both themselves and the HUD reviewer. Register for this class.

CNA e-Tool: Inspection Samples

In this class, participants learn how to ensure that the correct numbers and types of units are inspected in connection with the completion of the Assessment tool. During the first part of the class, the instructor discusses how to determine the unit sampling prior to arriving on site, the unit inspection requirements as stated in the MAP Guide, when exceptions are made, and how to note exceptions in the tool. During the second part of the class, participants ask questions and engage in a discussion about ensuring an acceptable number of units and unit types are inspected and getting down to specifics so that your HUD reviewer understands how you determined which units to inspect. Register for this class.

CNA e-Tool: Sorting, Sifting, and Manipulating Data

In this class, participants learn how various worksheets of the CNA e-Tool and exports from panels of the Validation Engine or the Submission Portal can be sorted – in simple and complex ways – in order to identify related entries and check for problems. During the first part of the class, the instructor discusses data sorts and manipulation and explains how to use sorting to facilitate your completion of the tool and detection of potential errors. During the second part of the class, participants discuss how to sort, sift through, and manipulate data in the CNA e-Tool in helpful ways. Register for this class.

CNA e-Tool: Accessibility

In this class, participants learn how accessibility requirements affect how the Needs Assessor completes the CNA e-Tool and the types of issues that occur when these items are not addressed correctly. During the first part of the class, the instructor discusses tools and tips to help you identify components impacted by accessibility requirements and how to address them properly. During the second part of the class, participants ask questions and engage in a discussion about accessibility requirements and ensuring they are addressed in the e-Tool through alternatives, recommendations, and scheduling. Register for this class.
