On May 24, President Trump signed into law the Family Self-Sufficiency Act which was passed by the House on May 23 as part of a larger piece of legislation (S. 2155).
Originally introduced by Reps. Sean Duffy (R-WI) and Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO), the legislation permanently reauthorizes the Family Self Sufficiency (FSS) Act and also makes several improvements:
- Combines Housing Choice Voucher and public housing FSS programs
- Extends eligibility to Project-Based Rental Assistance
- Provides new services for financial literacy
The FSS aims to enable families under Sections 8 and 9 to achieve economic independence and self-sufficiency. This is achieved through access to workforce training, educational opportunities, and financial support via an escrow account which can be applied to work-related items.
