The Opportunity Starts at Home campaign released the results of a national public opinion poll showing that the vast majority of the public (85 percent) believes that ensuring everyone has a safe, decent and affordable place to live should be a “top national priority.” Eight in ten respondents also stated that the President and Congress should “take major action” to make housing more affordable for low-income households. Eighty-two percent think it is very or fairly important for their elected leaders to address housing affordability and 78 percent said that the government has an important role to play in making sure there are enough affordable places to live. In addition, 76 percent of the respondents reported that they are more likely to vote for a candidate that has a detailed plan for making housing more affordable. The campaign has also released an open letter to 2020 presidential candidates urging them to prioritize housing affordability as a key pillar of their presidential campaigns and to develop a detailed national plan to address the challenge.
