Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) announced the Rent Emergencies Leave Impacts on Evicted Families (RELIEF) Act on July 16, legislation aimed at keeping residents in their homes during the COVID-19 pandemic. The bill bans evictions and foreclosures for a full year, prevents utility companies from cutting off access to power, water or gas and prohibits rent increases by landlords. The RELIEF Act eliminates penalties and late fees and prevents negative credit reporting. Additionally, the plan includes legal assistance and protections for renters and borrowers.
