On Sunday, January 3, the 117th Congress officially began with swearing in ceremonies and leadership elections in the House. Early January 7, both chambers certified the results of the 2020 presidential election after violence erupted in and around the Capitol the previous afternoon. Major news outlets called Georgia’s two Senate races for Jon Ossof and  Raphael Warnock, splitting the Senate 50-50 with Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris the tiebreaker vote.
