U.S. Senator Mark Begich (D-AK), chairman of the Senate Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee, called for President Barack Obama to expand the New Markets Tax Credit (NMTC) as part of his jobs initiative. Expanding the NMTC is one of several job-creation suggestions Begich collected from meetings and conference calls with thousands of Americans this year. In a letter to the president dated September 2, Sen. Begich suggests that expanding the NMTC will encourage small businesses to expand, especially in rural areas and for Native-owned businesses.
