To plan for its upcoming 100 year anniversary, the National Park Service (NPS) has released a Call to Action that details updates to the agency’s strategy, vision, mission, and goals. Within the Call to Action, four major themes arise: connecting people to parks, advancing the NPS educational mission, preserving important and unique places, and enhancing professional and organizational excellence. One important aspect of the plan is the agency’s strategy to modernize historic preservation methods and technologies and to demonstrate how historic structures can be made sustainable. The agency also hopes to update the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and Guidelines for the Treatment of Historic Properties in order to support efforts to rebuild the economic vitality of rural and urban communities across the country. NH&RA’s Historic Preservation Development Council (HPDC) will be submitting comments to the NPS as part of this effort. To learn more about HPDC, click here.
