Maine’s Blue Ribbon Commission on Affordable Housing had its inaugural meeting in Augusta last week to plot out a course of action to address Maine’s crisis in low-income housing. The meeting was an informational session with MaineHousing — the state’s Housing Finance Agency — to discuss the challenges that they face in meeting their goals, including an aging housing stock, incongruous rent prices and income, and the oldest population in the country. In addition, members of the commission agreed to look at the populations with the greatest risk, including elderly, homeless and Section 8 populations. The Blue Ribbon Commission is expected to meet twice more before submitting their recommendations to the Labor, Commerce, Research and Economic Development Committee in mid-January.
