The DC Council voted to approve the fiscal year 2021 budget, which includes a ten-year extension of DC’s rent control program and $9 million in additional funding for the Housing Production Trust Fund. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson also added $50 million for repairs to the DC Housing Authority’s public housing stock, $11 million for eviction prevention and homeless assistance and $6 million for the Local Rent Supplement Program. The council also approved a workforce housing pilot program, which would use $4 million in funding from real estate tax abatements to fund projects, largely in wealthy neighborhoods, which would set aside one-third of their units for those making less than 80 percent of area median income.
