On July 18, U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) unveiled a massive deficit reduction plan that calls for slashing federal spending, including for housing programs, and eliminating tax credit programs that promote affordable housing and community development, historic preservation, and renewable energy production.

The Tennessee Housing Development Council has released a list of preliminary changes proposed for the 2012 qualified allocation plan.

NH&RA’s Council for Energy Friendly Affordable Housing recently authored a new white paper suggesting way to improve how utility allowances are calculated for energy efficient LIHTC and HUD-assisted multifamily housing.

Both houses of Congress and the White House are reportedly considering varying forms of legislation that could, among other things, extend expiring tax credits provisions.

Key Senate and House legislators are reported to be negotiating an omnibus spending measure.

In yet another “wave” election, the Democratic Party has been swept out of the US House of Representatives as Congressional Republicans picked up approximately 60 seats (at time of press some final results are still in questions). The Democratic Party still maintains a majority in the US Senate. NH&RA will be providing additional coverage on the leadership and priorities of the next Congress in the upcoming weeks.

On Monday, September 27, President Obama signed the Small Business Jobs Act of 2010 into law. The legislation passed the House by a 237 to 187 vote; the Senate version of the bill was passed the previous week.
