Virginia Representative Glenn Nye (Dem.) recently announced draft legislation that would improve off-base living conditions for enlisted troops with families by making it easier for them to qualify for affordable housing. Nye’s bill, the Military Families Affordable Homes Act of 2009, would exclude military housing allowances from being counted as income when determining eligibility for affordable housing built under Section 42 of the Internal Revenue Code. The draft bill expands on similar legislation passed in 2008 that offered this benefit only to personnel stationed at select military installations.
