The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities has recently released updated national and state housing fact sheets and data for use by housing advocates. The comprehensive information reports on federal rental assistance nationally, by state, and by urban and rural areas, HUD assistance supporting families with children, the housing choice voucher program, sequestration cuts (85,000 vouchers have been eliminated since 2014) and more.

The National Fact Sheet reveals that

  • Rental assistance mainly supports low-wage earning families, as well as elderly and disabled persons.
  • More than 13% of US households receiving assistance live in non-metropolitan areas.
  • The majority of renters in need receive no assistance.
